The submissions this year were amazing, every artist went all out on their coffins. Boxes of Death 3D returns from it’s first multi city tour from which we headed from Seattle down the Pacific Coast Highway with over 50 coffins, dropped in on at least a ½ a dozen skate parks, and traversed approximately 2300 miles to bring death to nearly 1,000 people. The tour was a ton of fun and a great success on all fronts for Electric Coffin.

The submissions this year were amazing, every artist went all out on their coffins. The level of talent has risen exponentially in the last three years and this year was by far the most eclectic, crazy, interesting compilation of coffins yet. The show opened in Seattle on Saturday March 3rd at the Piranha Shop, and it was really cool to see everyone’s first responses to the work.

The Seattle showed drew over 350 fans, friends, family and a ton of new faces who got a chance to be the first to bear witness to Boxes of Death 3D, with artists from diverse backgrounds ranging from action sports artists and designers like Dennis Mcnett, Jamie Lynn, Son Duong, W3 Collective, Christina Burtner and Scott Fuller to street artists such as Weirdo and Johnny Tragedy, and beyond the brush or can we were graced by many mediums like glass artist Matt Spinney and ceramic artist Charles Kraftt.

Following the Seattle show everything was packed up and the crew rallied on down to Portland to host a show at NEMO Design on April 6, 2012. Portland went off, people came out of the woodwork to see BOD3D outside of Seattle for the first time. Local band The Lonesome Billies played an amazing set featuring their self-proclaimed “door swingin, boot stompin, whiskey drinkin, gator hootin, country and western music”. NEMO was an incredible space for such an event and the coffins looked great. Tons of new folks came out and supported the show by enjoying the coffins, tasty beverages from Black Star Beer, a ton of new POP Chip flavors, and of course some photobooth action.

It was hard to leave Portland after such a good night but LA was calling. We packed up again, piece by piece the 50+ coffins were neatly packed into the Toyota Tacoma “Tetris” style. From there it was time to hit the coast. Fortunately the LA show wasn’t for a couple days so there was no real rush. For Justin, it was his first time ever stepping foot into California so of course there were many touristy stops to be made. Aside from every skate park along the way from Newberg, Lincoln City, Santa Cruz and Venice City, there was the famous drive thru tree in the Redwoods, Babe The Blue Ox, Big Sur and of course In n’ Out.

Once in LA you could almost feel the energy and creativity, it was great. First stop was at The Holding Company for setup. The guys were awesome, really supportive; they even gave the exterior of the building a fresh coat of paint just for our show and promoted to the networks. The night of the show, events included Black Star shotgunning, over 150 brand new faces, Dj Gareth Stehr making tunes, a couple coffin sales, and a feature in a quarky blog about death called The Order of the Good Death. To sum it up LA was definitely a success.

Boxes of Death 3D was a ton of fun and more than anything we were stoked to have had the opportunity to bring over 50 of our friends and favorite artists to new audiences and look forward to doing it again next year.
